Who are we?
Founded in 2006 as a division of Carnegie Clark Golf, Australia’s oldest manufacturer of golf equipment, Drop Bear Golf was created from the realisation that premium golf bags could be sold up to 50% cheaper online, simply by removing the middlemen from the selling process. Drop Bear Golf's mission therefore became to develop a smarter breed of golf bag - one that has all the quality features of the premium bags you'd find in a golf shop but up to half the price.
Evolution gone right.
Utilising over 100 years experience in the golfing industry, Drop Bear Golf bags represent new benchmarks in value for money. Right from the beginning, the idea was clear - to create a bag that included all the features possible on a golfer's wish list without any of the unnecessary gimmicks. Once the aim was established, an experienced overseas manufacturer was invited to create a concept bag. Research was conducted to see if anyone else thought the bag was as good as we did and the results were overwhelming - fantastic, and bloody hurry up!
And so we did, and we are now excited to launch the first of, what we hope, will be a long line of Drop Bear Golf bags. A smarter bag for a smarter golfer.
So what is a Drop Bear?
If you mention “Drop Bear” to any group of Australians you will be met with varied response, some will dismiss it as pure nonsense, some will laugh it off nervously and try to change the topic and some might say they have never even heard of a Drop Bear. But those who have encountered a Drop Bear first hand will greet you with a stone cold stare.
Drop Bears are commonly said to be unusually large, vicious Koalas that inhabit treetops and attack their prey by dropping from the trees above. The Drop Bear is distinguished from the koala by it’s retractable, razor sharp claws, pronounced upper incisor teeth and taste for red meat.
There are no recorded Drop Bear encounters prior to the 1950’s, giving credence to the theory that the Drop Bear is a genetic mutation of the common koala, caused by exposure to radiation in the Australian outback thanks to nuclear tests conducted in the 1950’s.
When in search of food, the Drop Bear will sit poised, high among the trees waiting for it’s victim to wander into it’s drop zone. At precisely the right moment the Drop Bear will drop from the trees onto it’s prey and with it’s razor sharp claws and teeth render it’s victim helpless.
So the next time you're out on the course and you're about to go look for that ball you sliced into the trees, remember the legend of the Australian Drop Bear…. instead of trying to find your ball you might be best to take a drop!
So why name ourselves Drop Bear Golf?
Firstly, we were looking for something that people could identify as being uniquely Australian. The Drop Bear story is embedded in Aussie school yard folk lore, and we quite liked the association with an Australian legend – real or otherwise!
Secondly, we realised our bags and the Drop Bear have some very interesting similarities…
Anyway…you see where we are going with this. Basically, through an association with an Aussie creature we wanted to create cut through, intrigue and sell the message that we have some bloody good bags.
